Love Lab
Dr. Christopher Quinn-Nilas
Mentorship Philosophy
As a mentor, I strive to foster an environment where curiosity, collaboration, and intellectual growth thrive. My goal is to provide students with the tools, training, and support they need to ask meaningful research questions and pursue answers using rigorous, advanced statistical methodologies. I prioritize personalized guidance, encouraging independence while ensuring that students feel confident navigating the complexities of their research. Above all, I am committed to helping students develop as both scholars and individuals, empowering them to succeed in academia and beyond.
About Me.
My research delves into the dynamic and evolving nature of romantic and sexual relationships. Right now, I am particularly interested in the aftermath of several different kinds of trauma. Relationships are powerful drivers of health and well-being, and my work explores how both individual and shared experiences shape couples over time. By studying the ripple effects of major life events—such as the death of a partner, experience of sexual assault, or adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)—my lab uncovers how past experiences influence present-day relationship and sexual satisfaction.

We use sophisticated quantitative methodologies, including dyadic and longitudinal approaches, alongside a strong focus on psychological measurement and psychometrics. A key aim of our lab is to develop and refine tools that accurately capture the complexities of relationship dynamics, ensuring that our research is grounded in robust, psychometrically valid instruments. Utilizing advanced statistical tools is a significant passion of mine, and

In my lab, students are exposed to a comprehensive array of training opportunities in advanced quantitative methods. From learning sophisticated techniques to applying them in their own research, students are well-equipped to publish in leading academic journals. This hands-on training is designed to not only develop their technical skills but also to empower them to ask meaningful, novel questions within the field of relationship science.

Tell us a little about yourself?
After completing my MSc under Dr. Quinn-Nilas, I am now completing my PhD in Social, Developmental, and Personality Psychology at Western University under the supervision of Dr. John Sakaluk. My main interests are in trans* populations, psychometrics, quantitative methods, and community-oriented research. In my free time, I like reading thriller novels (C. J. Tudor is great), searching for spooky home decor, and cuddling my calico cat, Luna.
What does your work in the lab involve?
During my time in the lab, my research focused on body image in trans* and non-binary folks. I also assisted in grief/sexuality research.
What interests you about the work in the lab?
Dr. Quinn-Nilas' passion for psychometrics and quantitative methods + the incredibly welcoming and helpful vibe of the Love Lab!
What drives you?
Using research to better understand the world around me and, conversely, helping folks better understand research via knowledge translation.
